Data and AI: the rules in Cameroon

  • Law No. 2024/017 of 23 December 2024

    Cameroon's personal data law makes consent the rule. It creates a data protection authority and, depending on the processing, a prior notice, declaration or authorisation.

  • Sending data outside Cameroon

    A transfer abroad needs the authority's authorisation. Before we begin, we tell you in writing which country your data is hosted in.

  • Deadlines and implementing texts

    The law has applied to businesses since 23 June 2026. In March 2026, its implementing decree was still awaited, so we check the practical steps with you.

  • European rules if you serve EU customers

    The EU AI Act applies mainly within the European Union. It can still cover your tool if it serves people in the EU, such as buyers in Paris or Brussels.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need authorisation from Cameroon's data protection authority to use an AI agent?
It depends on the data the agent handles: the law sets a prior notice, declaration or authorisation. Sending data abroad needs authorisation. We give you in writing the hosting location and the technical description for your file.
Does the EU AI Act apply to a business in Cameroon?
It can, if your AI tool serves people in the European Union. Otherwise, Cameroon's own data law is your main reference.
Can the agent use our documents in English and in French?
Yes. It draws on your documents in both languages and replies in the language the customer uses.
Do we need to change our tools to use AI?
No. The agents connect to what you already use: email, calendar, customer file, WhatsApp, Excel or Google Sheets files, your website.
What budget should we plan?
